Notes

At 13th Mile Penrissen Road, this hospital admitted those with a diagnosis of Hansen’s disease from Sarawak, Sabah, Brunei, and Indonesia. The hospital is still operational. It has a ward and an outpatient clinic. The ward is a sobering prospect. It has very few patients, none of whom has Hansen’s disease now; they are elderly and frail. When they developed the disease they became disabled and isolated from their original communities. Now they cannot care for themselves. They have nowhere else to go, so their home is the ward. (Jenny Goldblatt, “Life after Leprosy” Student BMJ February 1999)
