The Cape Town Repository of The National Archives of South Africa have 2 534 entries on leprosy dating from 1892. There are individual patient files, warrants for removal, discharge and reports of escape. There are documents related to Leprosy Commission Reports from 1909, including evidence gathered by the Commission. Leprosy Administration Correspondence, newspaper cuttings from 1909, administrative documents related the bacteriological institute (Dr T L Sandes), and reports of various leprosy treatments are also included. Legislative material concerning the control of leprosy, Leprosy Board reports for Cape Colony, Port Alfred, the Umzimkulu and the Vryburg district, the Emjanyana leprosy asylum, Old Somerset Hospital, and material associated with the work of Dr Impey is held in this repository of the National Archives of South Africa.
There are also two plans of Hemel en Aarde Leper Colony in Swellendam district. The first is of the accommodation of leprosy patients (M1/3939) and the second is of the habitation of the Medical Officer (M1/3940)
