1940-1947 - Guy Henry Faget, MD, Director, National Leprosarium, United States Marine Hospital #66, pioneers sulfone drug therapy. Dr Faget and his staff demonstrate the efficacy of sulfone drugs, including Promin, Diasone, and Promizole in the treatment of Hansen's disease (HD), which gives new hope to sufferers. At the end of one year, fifteen of twenty-two patients had improved. Today, these sulfone drugs are part of the multi-drug therapy recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO) as effective treatment for Hansen's Disease. The most damaging Chinese story demonstrating how people with leprosy have been stigmatised is one written by the Qing novelist Xuan Nai (1834-1879). This is about Qiu Li-Yu who suffered from leprosy and was ordered to marry in order to sell off the disease, but because she did not have the heart to marry the young man to whom she was betrothed, she was cast out of the house by her father. She became a beggar and was afforded shelter by a young man. She was finally cured by drinking wine in which a snake was drowned. This story was made into a movie The Leprosy Girl and was shown widely in the 1940s. Uruguay - A news item in the IJL states that statistics of the last 40 years indicate a slow increase in the disease. The first census in 1898 recorded only 47 cases for the whole republic. This number was increased to 180 in 1905; Rodriguez Guerrero in 1929 concluded that there were around 300 cases; but according to Dr Cesar O Arguello, a member of the Commission of Hygiene and Assistance of the Chamber of Deputies, a number four or five times as large would be more correct. In Queensland, thirty-one people were confined in the lazaret on Peel Island and seventy-four were in the lazaret on Fantome Island. "The lazaret for coloured persons at Fantome Island is rapidly becoming a model institution.
