Notes

In the Annual Sanitation Report of 1920, it was stated that under the auspices of the Indian Research Fund Association, “Dr Muir is engaged at the Calcutta School of Tropical Medicine in carrying out an inquiry into leprosy with an allotment of Rs 20 000 a year of which Rs 10 000 will be donated by the Calcutta School of Tropical Medicine. The inquiry commenced on the 1st November 1920.

Dr Sudhamoy Ghosh continued his researches under the supervision of Lieutenant-Col J W D Megaw IMS on special duty at the School of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene. He is especially studying the chemistry of chaulmoogra oil with a view to obtaining substances of therapeutic value in the treatment of leprosy.

A grant was made to Frank Oldrieve for (a) the training of medical subordinates in the modern methods of leprosy treatment (b) a trial of the latest treatment of leprosy.

A grant of Rs 21 650 was made to the Mission for Lepers in India in 1918 in connection with the experiments relating to the medical treatment of leprosy. (1920: Annual Report of the Sanitary Commission with the Government of India)

In 1921 Muir’s research on Chaulmoogra continued in collaboration with Major R B Lloyd IMS. In 1928 Muir was training doctors in leprosy work in Calcutta. Muir’s activities extend to training assistants in Bengal and Bihar (dispensaries): “The Campaign in Bengal” Muir, Leprosy Notes 3(1928): 29-30 1927. He describes the appointment of five survey officers for five years in the Bengal Presidency. In 1929 Muir is advocating PTS treatment and survey.
