Dr C J Austin reports that in January 1952, he paid two visits to Tetere Leprosy Station accompanied by the Senior Medical Officer, where he consulted with the Sisters-in-charge, on their plans and problems, both medical and general. He reports that the “Government Leprosy Station at Tetere has been officially limited for the time being to a maximum capacity of 50 patients. Tetere will be, however, and is indeed proving, a much more valuable contribution to the problem than suggested by that limit. Although it received its first patients only two and a half years ago, and its capacity up to a month or so ago was only twenty four, there are already 60 outpaitents whose leprosy has been cleared or sufficiently improved to justify discharge, who are tramping a two to three days’ journey to Tetere for a periodical check up by the sister in charge, or for a further course of treatment, if required.
