The history of the Belgaum Leprosy Hospital begins in 1912 when an asylum was established. In 1971 the asylum was converted into a hospital. In 1976 a leprosy control programme started, which in 1978 developed further when the Sankishwas Mission Hospital amalgamated with Belgaum Hospital. In 1983 reconstructive surgery began and in 1984 MDT started. In 1991 the new hospital was built and a year later in 1992 community based rehabilitation began.
