Notes

The Paul Hibbet Clyde and Mary (Kestler) Clyde Papers: East Asian Clipping Files, 1929-1938.

Amongst the collection is one file entitled “Leprosy 1936”.

Paul Hibbert Clyde (1896- ), historian, was born in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada. A specialist in Far Eastern history, he wrote many articles and books on the subject, and served as a guest lecturer or consultant on numerous occasions.

The collection consists of newspaper clippings, and a few drafts of memoranda and translations of foreign news reports, given to Professor Clyde by Hugh L Reenleyside, who was first secretary of the Canadian Legation in Tokyo (1929-1936). The clippings come from about 30 English language newspapers and news services in Canada, China, Great Britain, Japan, and the United States. Centering on Sino-Japanese relations, they concern contemporary political, social, economic, military, and international affairs in China, Japan, and Manchuria (Manchukuo), primarily from the perspective of Japan’s role in these events. These include a newspaper clipping from the Japan Chronicle titled “The Extirpation of Leprosy”. The article is part of a collection of East Asian news clippings in the Clyde papers. They are arranged alphabetically according to subject headings (a list of the subject headings is kept in the first file of the collection), and then chronologically within the files.
