Norman Rose Sloan (1902-1977) began his missionary work at the Lutheran Hospital in Monrovia, Liberia, where he worked from 1928 to 1934. Following this he spent some months at Carville Leprosarium and then several years at the Christiansted Hospital in the Virgin Islands, which housed around 100 leprosy patients. After that he was Medical Director of Kalaupapa Settlement on Molokai, Hawaii, from 1940 to 1950.
In 1953 he carried out surveys on leprosy in territories for the South Pacific Commission and, in 1955, he returned to Hawaii as Chief of the Geriatrics, Cancer Control and VD Control Branch.
After his retirement, Dr Sloan returned to the South Pacific in order to conduct a three year study of a leprosy drug called DADDS on Pingelap Island.
